Technique 8
Selective coloring can really make the different between a dull picture and a vibrant one. There's a million ways to use the tool, but this is a simple one that creates a cool effect nonetheless.
First off you'll need to open the "selective color" window. You can do this by going through your taskbar and selecting in this order:
Image > Adjustments > Selective Color

After that, a window will pop up with a bunch of different sliders. You can change the coloring of any specific color in the picture, but for this effect we're just going to change the blacks. You can do this by selecting "Blacks" from the drop down list in this window:

I want to make the blacks darker, so I'm going to move that slider up to "100." To get the look I want, I'm also going to bring the "Yellow" slider back down to "-100." This will take away all the yellow coloring in the blacks, giving us the look of a purple/blue color.

(You can play around with the settings here as much as you want. Selective coloring is really a "hit-or-miss" situation when you start out.) By using the specific directions in this tutorial though, you should get something like this:
