Unwritten Law - Here's To The Mourning

By: Louie
For Fans Of: Rise Against, Less Than Jake.
Before I start let me just say that this is truly an album where I love
every single track. It's really that great!
The whole album is packed with high energy, great choruses, and rock anthems you've probably never heard. Unwritten Law for
me was "just another band" until their 2005 release of "Here's To The Mourning." From then on, they really became one of
the bands to keep an eye on. You know that type of rock music where you can get loud and get totally immersed into it?
This is it.
From start to finish the entire album is great. Even the 49 second intro is catchy. It builds up the anticipation for the
album and really sets the stage. It starts out very minimalistic escalating into a full on mash of different beats and sounds.
This all leads into the first track, "Get Up," a catchy song that's a little on the light side for the album's feel. Nonetheless,
it's a nice little ditty. The next song, "Celebration Song," is similar in sound but then leads into "Lost Control" which really kicks it into high
gear. This is the turning point in the album for me, where the catchy songs turn into
addictive songs that wont let up with their
amount of energy.
From here on, the album is full-on
rock. The breakout single, "Save Me," is at the heart of the album and for good reason.
It really sums up the highs and lows leaving you with the bittersweet feeling of hopelessness and vulnerability.
This track really is one of the best songs off the album. There are other ones that are just as great though! The next four songs, "I Like The Way," "Slow Dance," "She Said," and "Rejection's Cold" are among my favorites off the album.
Plain and simple, they're great songs you can't help but get stuck in your head. They lead on up to the best song (in my opinion)
"F.I.G.H.T." It's a track with the whole "back off and let me do it" concept. It works well. With a strong chorus and a
clear message, it's one of my all time favorite rock songs to date.
Be sure to listen to the last track on the album, "Walrus." (It was originally a hidden track but you can still get it off
providers like iTunes.) A great to end the album and also a nice comedown with it's mellow and pessimistic views. It's
perfect for those days when you just kinda
"hate the world."
"Here's To The Mourning" is a great great album filled with great rock songs I'm sure you'll love. It really is an album
for all the disoriented, loud, and uncontrollable pessimists in the world. I absolutely love this album and listen to it whenever I get
the opportunity. Give this album a chance. If you're a rock fan, 9 out of 10 of you will enjoy what you hear.
Recommendations:
"F.I.G.H.T." - Like I said, this one's a major personal favorite. It's got a great energy to it and is hands down
one of the best songs on the album.
"Slow Dance" - The opening lines of this song get stuck in my head more often than not.
"Hey pretty face I'll spin you
outta control, we're gonna dance dance dance til the end of the show." If that's not rock poetry I don't know what is.
"She Said" - A sad sad song. The message is clear, but you almost wish there was some sort of light at the end of
the tunnel. I love this song because real life doesn't always play out the way you want it to, and in this case, a relationship
often doesn't always end nicely. (Look up the music video as well. It's another exmaple of how unfair life sometimes is.)
"Save Me" - Things often spiral out of control. You don't know where you're going or how you got there and the first
thing that comes to mind is, "save me." This single gives you the most common answer,
"you can't save me."
"Walrus" - It's melancholy and half glass empty.
I love it.
