Tegan and Sara - The Con

By: Teresa D.

Tegan and Sara Quin are a Calgary born duo. They initially played as "Plunk" and lacked a bass and drum player. The twins got their break when they won Garage Warz Battle of the Bands in 1998. Soon after they were sign by Neil Young's record label Vapor Records in Canada and to Sire Records in the U.S. Since then the duo has released five full length albums. In 2000 Tegan and Sara won the YTV Achievement Award for Band/Musical Group and in 2003 they won the Western Canadian Music Awards for Outstanding Pop Recording, If It Was You.

Their newest album The Con has received much praise. Rolling Stone Magazine[1] gave the album three and a half out of five stars. Though the review seemed to focus more on the twin's sexuality rather than the CD itself. Allmusic.com[2] gave the album four out of five stars and gives an accurate in-depth review. The deluxe edition of The Con comes with a comical DVD of the making of The Con it also includes out-takes and much more. The album debuted at number 34 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and sold about 19,000 copies in its first week.[3]

Recommendations:
"Nineteen" - Although this song seems to be written about someone Tegan says in the Nineteen video chapter she never get specific about songs. "All my songs are about the same thing ... Me". This is a great song to listen to after a break up.

"Floorplan" - This quirky song features female guitarist Kaki King and adds a different dimension to the song. Sara's melodic voice and abstract lyrics make this song perfect to listen to during a night drive.

"Call It Off" - A sweet and short song Tegan says in The Con DVD "I wrote this song, It was like another middle of the night adventure, it was about myspace stalking, but the bigger idea of like you know reminding myself why I'm miserable all the time." This endearing song is great to listen to whilst relaxing on a sunny afternoon.
