Mae - The Everglow

By: S6 Staff - Sebastian.

After a strong debut, Mae came back even stronger with their second release The Everglow. The album peaked at #51 on the US Billboard Top 200. The Everglow is a concept album, because the album is meant to sound like a story. It even has a Prologue and Epilogue. To add to the story-like effect, in "Prologue" the narrator advises you to open the booklet that comes with the album, and follow along as you listen to the album. The booklet comes with full song lyrics and illustrations that tell a story. Most songs have transitions between them so all the songs blend together. This happens to be one of my favorite albums. In my opinion, the best way to listen to The Everglow is listening to the whole album straight through and not doing anything else while listening. The Everglow has two singles, "Suspension" and "Someone Else's Arms." A little over a year after Mae released The Everglow, they released The Everglow (Special Edition) [the second album cover at the top]. The re-release included three new songs, "A Day In the Life" [Beatles cover], "Where the Fall Begins" and "Suspension (Demo)." It also came with a DVD and new artwork. For the re-release, Mae recreated all the drawings from The Everglow into photography. I love how the album's songs vary from up-beat to mellow and everything in between. When gets me is how well written this album is. I'd recommend The Everglow to anyone.

Recommendations:
"We're So Far Away" - This song does a good job of starting off the album [besides "Prologue"]. It's pretty much an introduction to the story told by the album. To me, this song never gets old.

"Painless" - Honestly, I don't know how to describe this song. The tone is very serious. The music and lyrics on this track are incredible.

"The Ocean" - This is a pretty sad song, but one of my favorites on this album. Whenever I'm emotionaly wiped out, this song usually calms me down.

"Anything" - "Anything" has a good message and is quite catchy in my opinion. A great download for those of you who haven't listened to Mae much and want to give them a listen.
