Death Cab for Cutie - Plans

By: Jennifer D.

Hailing from Seattle, WA, Death Cab for Cutie has been around for about a decade making insanely cute indie CD after indie CD. However, I was surprised to find out that their latest CD wasn’t as accepted by the fans as their later material. Because personally, Plans is just as good, if not better, than every other CD that the band has released!

Friends of mine said that it was “poppier” than their later work and not “indie” enough. Though the music might be a little more upbeat than usual ON A COUPLE of songs, they still keep to their indie ways for the most part. The lyrics are still beautifully written in every song and will never fail to give you goosebumps.

Recommendations:
“Summer Skin” – A catchy song about how you experience things differently during summer. “I don’t recall a single care, just greenery and human air”. Soon enough, summer ends and you sort of shed the skin and any loves you grew over the past 3 months. A really moving song.

“What Sarah Said” – The lyrics are about someone passing away slowly. But really they are about living life and having someone by your side to “watch you die”. “What sarah said” is “LOVE is watching someone die”. The song ends with beautiful piano and the lyrics “so who is gonna watch you die?”.

“Brothers on a Hotel Bed” – One of my favorite songs of ALL TIME (much less this album). This song was actually written by the guitarist for the band (Chris Walla) which is a surprise from the usual writer, Ben Gibbard (singer). You would never know it though because this song is goosebump central. The piano is outright tear-jerking and the drums are so subtle that it makes the song even more beautiful. The lyrics are about changing, growing old and growing apart from someone you love. It seems sad but it almost seems okay. I cried when I saw them play it live.
